Working with the Irish Traveller Community
Through performing our show ‘Fix Freddie!’ Within the Traveller site in Kensington, London, PuppetSoup were able to develop a connection with the local council and organisers of the after school club provided for the children who live at the site.
Over two years of weekly and bi-weekly classes PuppetSoup worked with children aged 3-8 to provide a range of arts, crafts, puppet making and show performances for the children to participate in.
Young people learned a range of arts and crafts skills including painting, sculpting, mask making, shadow puppet construction, set construction and of course puppet making from a wide range of materials. PuppetSoup also taught performance skills and encouraged the children to participate in shows for their friends and family who are also resident on the site.
Over the two years the children became familiar with PuppetSoup and enjoyed the variety of activities they were offered.
In particular the freedom to create art of their choosing seemed to be a favourite thing to do in the classes.
Many of the children were competent performers, excellent story tellers and talented makers with a lot of potential for artistic excellence.
